About us

Our sheepfarm is situated in the northwest of Germany, 20 km south of Dortmund, in a region called “Sauerland”.
We started farming in 1990. Since 1991 we are farming organically, following the rules of the Bioland-association.
We have about 60 hectars ( 150 acres ) of pasture and arrable land on which we grow a clover-grass mixture. In addition we have a few grazing areas under a nature conservation program.
We keep about 300 ewes, commercial crosses out of Ile de France x Charollais.
Besides we own some goats and poultry.
The main part of our pasture is fenced only for the smaller pieces we use mobile electric fences.
We produce our own forage for the winter. Only a small amount of organic grain is bought in because we do not grow it on our farm.
Our ewes are able to lamb out of season therefore we produce lambs all the year round depending on our needs. The older ewes mainly lamb twice a year, the yearlings lamb in May and June.
We are working with Working Kelpies and Border Collies. Our Kelpies are registered with the WKC (Working Kelpie Council of Australia) and we breed under the prefix “Letnetti”.

Letnetti stud was the first Working Kelpie stud in Germany.

We started working with Kelpies in 1990. Before that we had Old German and German Shepherds. But these did not fit well in a sheepfarm which is mostly fenced.
The Working Kelpie is the optimal dog for our farming and handling system. We use our dogs for all kind of livestock work. Especially the work in the yards and in the race is much easier, now, because of the independend workwise of the Kelpie. Using the in the stable, on the paddocks, for droving, walking the furrow and loading is no problem, too.
The Working Kelpie is a shorthaired, mid-sized working dog with a intense herding instinct.
It is a very versatile dog, able to handle all kinds of livestock. The Kelpie normally works big flocks out of the movement and has a herding style similar to an Old German Shepherd, while small groups are worked with eye like the Border Collie.
The Working Kelpie does not fit in a strict scheme. But it is easy to train and handle if its natural abilities are considered.
Normally our pups start to show interest in sheep at the age of 10-12 weeks. They round up the sheep
and try to influence the direction. This herding ability is inborn and has not to be trained.
In the first year we try to stimulate these instinct in working, e.g. various kinds of sheep, flocks of different sizes, changing the places (stable, paddock) to prepare the pups for their working life.
We are focused on the natural abilities of the pups and give each dog the time it needs for its development. Some of the difficulties which might acure in the beginning disapear after a few weeks if the dog gets older. We take time in training our dogs !
Working Kelpies from our stud are working sheep, cattle and poultry at home and abroad.

The Working Kelpie has not to be confused with the Show Kelpie, it is a different breed !!

Occasionally we are breeding a litter, this depends on the orders we get. Sometimes we have started  or trained dogs for sale but only to working homes !
Intense care for the pups, customer guidance and later advice in training is obvious.
Our pups are fully registered with the Working Kelpie Council of Australia.
